Thomson and Bishop take Church Walk Titles

Carl Thomson led the field from start to finish retaining the honour of being Church to Church Mens Champion, winning the Victory Cup, sponsored by Harrods Bank. He finished in a time of 2.58.07, slightly quicker than his winning time last year. Walking at a steady tempo he reached 10 miles in 93 minutes, pushing on to 2.17.20 at Vale Church and the 15 miles point, where he had around a five minutes advantage over Ryan and Jason Le Noury. The advantage was increased over the final miles to eight minutes.

Fiona Bishop from Woking AC, in her first Church walk and longest competition to date walked steadily throughout and came home as first woman in a fast time of 3.41.25. In second place and first local home, suprising even herself, Jayne Le Noury finished five minutes quicker than her winning time set last year, to get her name once again on the StarTrophy sponsored by Network Insurance, as first local woman home. Jaynes time of 3.55.32 was a new personal best time for the course, beating her previous best time set way back in 1982! She also took home the Jenny Elliott Salver as first local Over 35.Carol Bates took third place. Fiona Bishop won the Newcomers award, sponsored by Saffery Champness.

It was a good day for the Le Noury`s as Jason strode home in second place. After a race long battle with the experienced Peter Ryan, a winner of the event in 2002, Jason edged ahead in the final mile to cross the line in 3.06.22 to Ryan`s 3.07.01. Le Nourys time was a new personal best time, faster by two minutes than his time last year.

Peter Ryan won the Healthspan Super Vets tankard, with winner Thomson securing the C J Robin tankard sponsored by Guernsey Candles.

Local walker Phil Lockwood, wary of his bad spell during his debut race last year walked to fourth place taking five minutes off his best time.

Showing that age is no barrier to fast walking, seventy year old Ed Shillabeer from Plymouth, a previous winner clocked 3.14.50 for 5th place to win the Saffery Champness Over 70 trophy.

It was a bad day at the office for Mick Le Sauvage as he succumbed to a back injury around 13 miles. In his 47th walk and ambition to finish 50 he now has an extra year to wait for that significant milestone. Not too down beat later in the day, Mick will be back on the line again.

The Sarnia Walking Club beat Ilford AC for the Fletchersports Team Trophy. Another personal best for the Le Noury family was by Stuart Le Noury, who finished in 3.22.44. He was joined by     brother Jason and Phil Lockwood as they won the Parish Shield for Vale.

Kevin Le Noury in his 34th walk joined forces with wife Jayne to win the Relate Husband and Wife Award.

The final team award went to the Channel Islands 6 man team who beat the Overseas 6 to the KPMG Mob Match.

All competitors went home refreshed and with Medals and goody bags thanks to the kind sponsorship of Healthspan, NM Rothschild, Trust Corporation of the Channel Islands, KPMG, Guernsey Sports Commission and Taj Mahal.

The organisers of the walk, the Sarnia Walking Club would like to thank all who helped out with the walk in any way. Thank you.
