Past Church to Church walk winners are amongst the entries from the UK joining the local Guernsey walkers in Sundays 19.4 miles walk.

Peter Ryan (Ilford AC) and Edmund Shillabeer (London Vidarians), past winners, have entered along with Oliver Browne, Kevin Marshall, Steve Allen (Ilford AC). Fiona Bishop (Woking AC), Bernard Hercock (Enfield AC)and David Hoben (Surrey WC).

Challenging for the Guernsey Victory Cup as first local home should be defending Champion Carl Thomson, the Le Noury brothers, Stuart and Jason and Phil Lockwood.

Mick Le Sauvage enters for the 48th time, whilst Kevin Le Noury toes the line for Church Walk number 34.

Defending womens Champion Jayne Le Noury and local Carol Bates have also entered up to now………………….still time for more entries!

Traditional Walk Challenge from Church to Church

Guernsey`s annual Church to Church road walk takes place on Sunday Sepember 6th with a start time of 9.00 am for the women and 9.30 am for the men. The start and finish is at the South Esplanade and takes in a route passing all the parish Churches over a distance of 19.4 miles. The walk climbs out of Town and heads to St Martins Church, then along the main road heading towards the airport and skirting Forest Church, before heading to the country Parish Churches of Torteval (6.25 miles), St Peters and St Saviours. The 10 miles point is within view of the Little Chapel, with the walk heading towards St Andrews. The next Church is at Castel with a long downhill section to Landes du Marche and on towards 15 miles and Vale Church. The walk continues to the Bridge and past St Sampsons Church and on towards the sea front at Grandes Maison Road. The final miles along the coast to the finish at Havelet Bay, South Espanade has the walkers passing through the Town seafront, which on the day is closed to traffic.

The course is marked with white arrows and is open to all over 18 years old. The generous time limit of 5 hours for the men and 5 hours 30 minutes for the women caters for the race walkers and those who just want to get around the course.

Local sponsorship will see that no one goes home empty handed. Saffery Champness and KPMG have helped the organising Sarnia Walking Club to give all finishers certificates and medals, as well as shields for the first three men and women home.

Harrods Bank and Network Insurance have sponsored the two oldest trophies in the walk for the leading Channel Island man and woman. In the age group categories there are awards for the young and the older with the Rothschild Under 19 womens trophy, Taj Mahal Under 19 mens trophy, Jenny Elliott Salver, C J Robin Veterans Tankard sponsored by Guernsey Candles, Healthspan Super Vet Tankard and Saffery Champness Over 70 Ilford Trophy. There are awards for the winning Parish, the Trust Corporation of the Channel Islands Family Trophy and the Relate Guernsey Husband and Wife Trophy.

Newcomers to the walk can challenge for the Network Insurance mens trophy and the Guernsey Sports Commission womens trophy.

Race walking teams will compete for the Fletchersports Team trophy with Sarnia Walking Club taking on Ilford AC at present.

Guernsey leading walkers Carl Thomson, Phil Lockwood and the Le Noury brothers are expected to be towards the front of the field with past winner Peter Ryan of Ilford AC amongst them. First across the line is expected to take under three hours. The leading woman is expected to finish in under four hours.

Mick Le Sauvage at 70 years old will be taking part for the 48th time, since his first appearance in 1959. Further details of the event from Jayne Le Noury, tel 246865.

Fiona Bishop (Woking) has entered the event for the first time, whilst Masters walker Bernie Hercock (Enfield) makes a return visit. Both pictured in action in the National 20 kms Championships in Shrewsbury earlier this year.
